Biden's Bio
Joseph Robinette Biden Jr., known as Joe Biden, was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is an American politician and the 46th President of the United States, serving since January 20, 2021. Biden, a member of the Democratic Party, previously served as the 47th Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017 under President Barack Obama.
Biden's early life was marked by a move to Delaware, where he grew up in New Castle County. He attended the University of Delaware, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1965, and later graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968. Biden's political career began in 1972 when he was elected to the U.S. Senate from Delaware at the age of 29, making him one of the youngest people ever elected to the Senate.
During his long tenure in the Senate, Biden was known for his work on foreign policy, criminal justice, and drug policy. He served as the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1987 to 1995 and as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2009. Biden played a crucial role in the passage of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994 and was a key figure in foreign policy debates regarding the Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Biden's personal life has been marked by tragedy and resilience. In 1972, shortly after being elected to the Senate, his wife Neilia and one-year-old daughter Naomi were killed in a car accident, while his sons Beau and Hunter were seriously injured. Biden remarried in 1977 to Jill Tracy Jacobs, an educator, and they have a daughter, Ashley.
As Vice President, Biden was instrumental in the Obama administration's policies on economic recovery, healthcare reform, and foreign policy. He was a key advocate for the Affordable Care Act and played a significant role in shaping U.S. policy in Iraq and Ukraine.
Biden's 2020 presidential campaign focused on uniting the country, addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, rebuilding the economy, and tackling climate change. He won the election against the incumbent President Donald Trump and took office during a time of significant national challenges.
