UPDATED: Mangione Charged With Murder for the Shooting of United Healthcare CEO

On Monday, investigators took into custody Luigi Mangione, the person of interest in the killing of the UnitedHealth CEO. They believe he acted alone.

New York prosecutors Monday night announced they charged Mangione with murder. Separately, Pennsylvania officials have charged him with five crimes.

He was arrested at a McDonald's in Altoona, PA.

Altoona Police issued the following statement to social media: Today [Tuesday} at 9:14 am, Altoona Police Officers were dispatched to a McDonald’s Restaurant for reports of a male matching the description of the United Healthcare CEO murder suspect. Officers made contact with the male who was subsequently arrested on unrelated charges. At this time, the Altoona Police Department is cooperating with local, state, and federal agencies.

“We believe at this point — our investigation is leaning toward he was acting alone,”  NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said on Monday told CNN.

Officers said Mangione was carrying multiple fake identification cards and a US passport, as well as a “suppressor,” which they said was “consistent with the weapon used in the murder.”

Among Mangione’s belongings was also a handwritten three-page manifesto decrying the healthcare industry’s profit motives, according to authorities. The slaying of Thompson comes amid an intensifying groundswell of anger against the for-profit insurance industry.

Multiple news organizations report that Mangione attended the Ivy League University of Pennsylvania.

Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was at a midtown hotel at around 6:46 a.m. on Wednesday, arriving early for a conference, when a masked man allegedly waiting for him fired at the CEO repeatedly and fled eastbound off of 6th Avenue.
