BREAKING NEWS: House Minority Leader Arrested

House Minority Leader Bob Watson was arrested at a DUI checkpoint in Connecticut at the end of last week.

The arrest took place Friday night at a state of Connecticut funded DWI checkpoint on Route 80 in the Foxon neighborhood in East Haven, CT, according to Sgt. Gary DePalma of the East Haven Police Department in an interview with GoLocalProv.com.

According to the New Haven Register, “there was a strong odor of marijuana emanating from Watson’s car."

DePalma said Watson was released on a nonsurety bond the same night. As of Sunday evening, the police report was not available.

The 50 year old Watson, who represents District 30, has been Minority Leader since 1998. Watson made headlines in February after a joke he made at a Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce event. Suggesting the state had the wrong priorities, Watson said, “I suppose if you are a gay man from Guatemala who likes to smoke pot and gamble, you probably think we’re onto some good ideas here.”

Watson’s office is expected to release a statement Monday.
