BREAKING NEWS: Taveras Imposes Furloughs for Non-Union Staff

The furlough day—which must be taken between now and the end of the 2011 fiscal year—applies to roughly 160 employees. The move is expected to save $40,000.
The furloughs come after the release of the annual audit for 2010, which showed the city ended the year with an estimated $57 million deficit.

Although the savings won't make much of a dent on the deficit, Withers said the furloughs send an important message. "Savings resulting from the furlough day is a
small amount of money but the action is a way to signal that restoring fiscal stability in the City of Providence will require shared sacrifice from everyone," Withers said in a statement.
