UPDATED: Police Union Condemns Esserman

The Providence police union issued a statement this afternoon reaffirming its 2009 no-confidence vote against Police Chief Dean Esserman, after he was suspended today for shouting at a subordinate officer over the weekend. Council President Michael Solomon also issued a statement on the incident (see below).

“Clearly the reasons and basis for our original ‘no confidence’ vote have not diminished, as evidenced by Col. Esserman’s recent and continued actions,” the union said its the statement.

The union continued: “The F.O.P. Lodge No. 3 feels that Col. Esserman has lost his ability to lead this Police Department effectively, and has also displayed a less-than-professional demeanor towards members of the public and officers who serve this Police Department. The chief of police is and should be held to a higher standard.”

The union applauded Pare for the suspension and said it looked forward to a “continued line of communication and working relationship” with Pare and Mayor Angel Taveras.

UDPATE: Council President backs Safety Commissioner

Council President Michael Solomon also issued the following statement yesterday on the suspension of Esserman.

“It's always unfortunate when there is a disciplinary matter in one of the city's departments, but I am encouraged by the Commissioner's leadership and handling of the situation," Solomon said. “I have always been a supporter of a Public Safety Commissioner to oversee the Department of Public Safety. Not only does it improve coordination between the departments, but the position also provides a much-needed layer of oversight to ensure departments don't just police themselves. It's important to note disciplinary measures have been taken and the party involved has recognized his wrongdoing.”
