Governor Lincoln Chafee has been reported to be in talks with Democratic officials and is said to be joining the Democratic Party.

Politico has reported that sources have said that Chafee intends to switch his party designation from Independent to Democrat.

Chafee could potentially have a Democratic primary in 2014 facing Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo.

A spokesperson for Chafee's office declined to comment.
