Judge and former Rhode Island Lieutenant Governor Richard Licht was hit by a vehicle outside the Rhode Island State House on Wednesday, GoLocal has learned.

Licht is presently a Superior Court Justice in Rhode Island. 

The 74-year-old Licht served as a Democratic State Senator from 1973 to 1984. He then served two terms as Lt. Governor from 1985 to 1989. In 1988, he ran for the United States Senate and lost to incumbent Republican John Chafee.

According to multiple sources, the incident happened on Smith Street shortly after 5 PM.

It is unclear the extent of Licht’s injuries at this time.

He was reportedly taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital. He was listed in critical condition and was placed in the trauma unit at the hospital.

Witnesses say the driver of the vehicle remained on the scene.
