Breonna Taylor — One Indictment, 2 Officers Shot, Protests Nationally and in Providence

One Louisville police officer was indicted in the death of Breonna Taylor.
On Wednesday, it was announced that a grand jury indicted Brett Hankinson, one of the Louisville police officers who entered Breonna Taylor's home in March and shot her at least eight times, on three counts of wanton endangerment.

None of the three officers involved in the botched drug raid will face charges related to the actual death of Taylor, such as homicide or manslaughter.

The two other officers, Jonathan Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, were not charged at all. Hankison's bond was set at $15,000.

Protests Erupt — Two Officers Shot

Two Louisville police officers were shot during demonstrations on Wednesday night.

The New York Times reports:

Robert J. Schroeder, the Louisville police chief, said at a brief news conference that a suspect was in custody and that neither of the officers’ injuries were life-threatening. One of the officers was alert and stable, and the other was in surgery, he said.

“I am very concerned about the safety of our officers,” Chief Schroeder said. “Obviously, we’ve had two officers shot tonight, and that is very serious; it’s a very dangerous condition.”

Protests in Seattle and Portland were effectively declared riots after demonstrators set fires and threw explosives at the police, reported the NYT

In Providence, a group of over a hundred protesters took to the streets downtown. The group tried to block the highway entrance next to Providence Place Mall. There was a significant presence of the Providence Police.
