Brown University has named a new Dean of the College. Professor Maud Mandel was promoted from within the university. She is currently Director of Program of Judaic Studies. Mandel will assume her new duties on July 1.
The College at Brown University offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 70 different programs.
Professor Mandel came to Brown in 1997, with appointments in history and Judaic studies. She has served on several school advisory committees including on faculty diversity, graduate studies, academic priorities, curriculum, childcare planning, preparations for outside reviews, and many faculty and staff searches.
Mandel is a graduate of Oberlin College, majoring in English, with master's and doctoral degrees in history from the University of Michigan. As a professor, she has focused on the history of France since the mid-20th century, particularly with regard to multiculturalism, immigration, modernity, post-Holocaust European history, genocide, Muslim-Jewish relations, and nationalism. Her work has been supported by a number of foundations and agencies, including appointments at Brown as a Seave Faculty Fellow at the Pembroke Center, a Cogut Faculty Fellow, and a Salomon Faculty Research Award recipient.
