Brown Announcement
On Monday, Brown made the following announcement:
"Dear Members of the Brown Community,
We are deeply saddened to share news of the death of a beloved member of our community. Benjamin Lotsoff, an undergraduate student concentrating in chemistry who lived off-campus in Providence, has passed away.
Ben will be remembered as a gifted and ambitious chemistry student who was incredibly intelligent, kind, thoughtful and funny. A particularly inquisitive scholar, Ben was passionate about science and organic synthesis. He liked to think big-picture and enjoyed learning about how chemists in the past solved difficult scientific problems without access to the technology and instrumentation of today.
He had embarked on a study of the chemical synthesis of vitamin B12, striving to re-create every reaction in this complex chemical process. He delved deeply into problems and spent a great deal of time reading and discussing ideas with his fellow students and professors in the chemistry department. He also immersed himself in music, independently studied architecture, and had an adventurous and enthusiastic appreciation of cuisines from many different cultures. He will be greatly missed by his peers, professors and loved ones.
Ben grew up in the Chicago suburbs. He graduated from high school in 2018, where he was an accomplished classical trombone player, participated in cross country, and was named an Illinois State Scholar. Our hearts are with everyone from both the Brown community and others in Ben’s life who are impacted by this heartbreaking loss.
Brown students in need of support or counsel are urged to reach out to any of the following offices for assistance: Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) (401) 863-3476; the deans in the office of Student Support Services (401) 863-3145; or the Office of the Chaplains & Religious Life (401) 863-2344. For academic support or accommodations, students may consult with individual faculty members or academic advising deans in the College."
