“It is unfortunate that the receiver has decided to close these vital community resources which provide an important safety net to thousands of children, youth and seniors in one of the poorest communities in the state,” Diossa said in a statement. “The impact this will have on our city far outweighs the savings achieved. Real, structural savings will only be achieved when all stakeholders negotiate in the taxpayers’ best interest.”
Flanders announced the closure of the Central Falls Public Library and the Ralph J Holden Community Center earlier this week in a release issued through the Governor’s office. He has warned that the city could soon face real bankruptcy if it does not negotiate sufficient savings with city labor unions—or receive enough in state aid.
