VIDEO: Cicilline on "Terrible" Zero Tolerance Policy After Touring Texas Detention Facility

Congressman David Cicilline spoke with GoLocalProv at T.F. Green Airport on Tuesday.
Congressman David Cicilline spoke with GoLocalProv on Tuesday about his recent visit inside a detention center in McAllen, Texas -- and what he sees as next steps.

"We visited the port of entry, the processing facility, and the detention facility for both the children and adults. The reason we went was to see first hand what the impact of this child separation policy is," said Cicilline.  "It was a very, very difficult visit. We talked to the moms whose children were taken...the agents just took the children and they never saw them again and they didn't know why, they didn't really explain it -- a couple had spoken with their children on the phone, but most had not."

Several Democratic lawmakers and the news media each got a firsthand look at the impact of President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" policy of separately detaining children and parents trying to cross the border, which has led to about 2,000 children being separated from their parents in the past 45 days.

The lawmakers chose Father's Day.

"This is a terrible policy, this zero tolerance policy -- whatever people's views are on immigration, everyone agrees that taking children from their parents is not good policy, and does lasting damage to these children, said Cicilline.

RI Candidates on Record

On Tuesday, GoLocal reported, "Fung Refuses Comment on Trump Administration’s Family Separation Policy."

Rhode Island GOP gubernatorial candidate Allan Fung’s campaign refused comment on the practice by the Trump Administration of separating children from their family at the border, which has reportedly now seen 2,000 children removed from their parents in six weeks.

Other Rhode Island Republican gubernatorial — and U.S. Senate — candidates, however, weighed in on the issue — and are opposed to the practice of separating families.
