Clay Pell: 14 To Watch in Rhode Island in 2014

Clay Pell, potential gubernatorial candidate
In October, GoLocal broke that Clay Pell, grandson of six-term Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell, was weighing a potential 2014 gubernatorial run in Rhode Island.

Pell, whose resume includes being a White House staffer and Coast Guard Reserve Officer, married Olympic figure skater Michelle Kwan in a ceremony at First Unitarian Church in Providence in 2013, and was appointed by President Obama as Deputy Assistant Secretary for International and Foreign Language Education in April.

While Pell has yet to formally declare his intentions, he has hired one of the top political spokespersons in the state in the way of Bill Fischer, and for all intents and purposes appears to be poised to join Providence Mayor Angel Taveras and Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina Raimondo in the Democratic primary.

So what to watch for in 2014? "Pell would start the race with good name identification, but it is very shallow. He would need to quickly establish himself," said Jennifer Duffy with The Cook Political Report. "What is his key issue? What is his vision for the state? Can he rally key Democratic constituencies like the unions around his candidacy? What is his geographic base?"

Stay tuned, Rhode Island. With Pell in the race—and the backing of high profile Washington connections, not to mention massive personal wealth—2014 could one very interesting political year.
