COMING SUNDAY: The Tangled Web of Foulkes, Her Senator Uncle, the Sacklers & Purdue Pharma

 

This Sunday, GoLocal publishes its most in-depth investigative report on CVS and its President Helena Foulkes' role in the opioid crisis.

This upcoming piece tracks the relationship between Foulkes, her uncle, then-U.S. Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT), and the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma — the company “that started and fueled the opioid epidemic,” according to one state’s attorney general. Purdue Pharma is headquartered in Dodd's home state of Connecticut.

This investigation reports on two separate but linked tracks of how Senator Dodd used his political might to fight off attacks on Purdue Pharma in the early days of the epidemic.

And, it looks at how Dodd received tens of thousands in political donations and donations to the Dodd Center at the University of Connecticut from the Sacklers.

“Deaths from prescription opioid overdoses have quadrupled from 1999 to 2011, as have opioid prescriptions, even though pain levels reported by Americans have not changed. By 2013, drug overdoses were the nation’s leading cause of deaths from injury,” cites the USDOJ in its lawsuit against CVS unveiled in December of 2024.

During much of this time, Foulkes held both top roles at CVS as its President and Vice President of Pharmacy, and she was the chair of the Dodd Center.

Prior to publishing this, GoLocal, over the past few weeks, has reached out to Foulkes and her campaign seven times, and on two occasions, they agreed to set a time and then reneged.
