Not a Popularity Contest

This is not a popularity contest nor are the selections necessarily the best known. The selections are based on their respective roles over the last twelve months.

Did they change Rhode Island -- for good or bad?

The greatness of Rhode Island is often lost, the talent often overlooked, and our flaws examined under microscopes.

Our selection for Woman and Man of the Year may delight or aggravate. We look forward to Rhode Island's reaction.

Some of the previous selections have included then-General Treasurer Gina Raimondo who was recognized in 2013 and was cited as she "saved the pension system -- and/or rewarded Wall Street.” The discussion continues to rage today. Raimondo has been selected twice.

In 2016, Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello was selected and GoLocal wrote, “He is inarguably the most powerful political figure in the State of Rhode Island. The Speaker of the House is at the center of it all. He is the lightning rod, the decider, the extolled, and the maligned.”

Last year, neither of the selections were from politics or business, but from sports and the arts respectively.

On Tuesday, GoLocal will unveil the 2019 selections of Rhode Island’s Woman and Man of the Year.
