A community forum is being held Tuesday night for the public's input on a new, permanent Superintendent for Providence public schools in an online discussion.

In August 2021, Governor Dan McKee had announced that Dr. Javier Montañez would continue to head the Providence Public School District as Acting Superintendent for the 2021-2022 school year after serving as interim superintendent.

The online Zoom forum is being held on Tuesday, February 15 from 5:30 to 7 PM.

About Forum

The group, whose spokesperson is Classical High School graduate Gabe Mernoff, says the following.

"Governor Daniel McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green should begin the process of searching for the next permanent superintendent of Providence Public Schools. As one of the initial steps in the process, parents, students, teachers, community, and advocates should have an opportunity to provide input on the desired characteristics and skills that they would like to see in our permanent Superintendent.

Providence Public Schools has been a chronically underperforming district for many years.  The community is still in shock from the devastating findings of the Johns Hopkins report and the circumstances surrounding the dismissal of Superintendent Harrison Peters. For RICAS 2021, Providence Public Schools, the state’s largest school district, was next to last in comparison to other districts with 6.8% proficiency in math and 14% in ELA. Therefore, the role of the Superintendent is vital to students, families, and the overall city of Providence.

Our permanent Superintendent should have a proven track record of mitigating, disrupting, and dismantling educational inequities in an urban public school district. Please join us to make your voice heard!"
