Controversies Piling Up for Mattiello

Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello
Rhode Island Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello has faced a number of controversies since he took over the speakership from Gordon Fox in March of 2014 — nearly six years ago.

In the spring of 2016, Mattiello’s leadership team was under fire. Key allies House Finance Chair Raymond Gallison and Vice Chairman John Carnevale were forced out of their posts and out of the legislature. Gallison pleaded guilty to four counts of mail fraud; one count of wire fraud; one count of aggravated identity theft; one count of aiding the filing of a false tax document; and two counts of filing a false tax return.

In 2017, top Mattiello aide -- Joint Committee on Legislative Services Executive Director Frank Montanaro -- was highly criticized for taking $50,000 in free education.

At the time, Montanaro issued the following statement:

After consultation with my family and Speaker Mattiello, I believe the best thing to do is return the monetary equivalent of the tuition benefit my children received after I transitioned to my new role at the General Assembly. I will be contacting Rhode Island College tomorrow to make the necessary arrangements.

As an employee of the General Assembly, I want to apologize for the distraction this matter has caused over the past few days. My initial response to media inquiries missed the mark and I now realize the negative perceptions that have manifested with the general public.

Mattiello said, “I had a conversation with Frank and I believe he has done the right thing by agreeing to pay the money back.”

Now, Mattiello is facing court cases, State Police investigations and much more.
