“The community has lost a woman whose life was stolen from her - as she visited loved ones. We are saddened and shocked by the manner Berta was murdered, showing the abuser’s complete disregard for anyone else’s safety,” said Tonya Harris, executive director, Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence
“There are several laws in place in Rhode Island that require criminal background checks before the purchase of a gun, and the surrendering of firearms when a person is convicted of a domestic violence crime. The presence of a firearm in a domestic violence situation makes a homicide five times more likely. We must do all we can to ensure guns do not reach the hands of abusers in the first place, and stay out of their possession,” said Harris.
“Berta’s family, friends, and the community deserve to know: How did Oscar have access to a firearm, despite having a domestic violence history? This murder is the fourth domestic violence homicide in Rhode Island this year. Domestic violence robs our fellow Rhode Islanders of their peace and safety, and we must reject this abuse as a community,” said Harris.
- A stabbing occurred at the G Pub in the Financial District on Sunday morning at approximately 2:00 AM. The Board of Licenses have ordered the club on Orange Street to be closed.

The violent weekend comes after a week in which gangs of Providence youth attacked pedestrians on both South Water Street near the new Pedestrian Bridge and in a separate incident on Federal Hill.
Mayor Jorge Elorza has made no comment on any of the incidents. His office has refused to respond to requests for comment.

Former Providence Mayor Joseph Paolino, told GoLocal Friday before the weekend of violence.
"What [GoLocal] has been writing about with the Jump bikes and crime is a bigger problem and I feel being overlooked. The city needs to add two more police schools back to back and have a farm team all trained and ready to go to fill vacant positions on the police department as they come about. We are still approximately 100 short and that’s not good for providence,” said Paolino.
“In regards to the Superman building it’s a symbol of failure by the political and business leadership of our city and state. Our leaders have to stop kicking the can on these problems and to take action,” said Paolino.
