Stephen Dambruch has been appointed United States Attorney for the District of Rhode Island by the United States District Court Chief Judge William Smith. This appointment was effective on Friday, but functionally is an extension of his interim status.

Due to a number of statutory requirements -- the presiding judge of the RI federal court must name a U.S. attorney when the interim period runs its full course -- 120 days.

It is expected that President Donald Trump will name a permanent appointment in the next few months. Three candidates are being vetted.
