Day One to Hold 5K to Kickoff Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Day One kicks off Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) campaign with a 5K Run/Walk To End Sexual Violence on April 5th.

Day One is bringing together students from high schools and universities across Rhode Island, businesses, and other organizations to be a part of the movement.

The road race will take place on the East Side of Providence, and is the first of its kind in the state aimed at raising awareness about sexual assault on college campuses. In line with President Obama’s recent formation of a task force designed specifically to address college sexual assault, Day One is committed to addressing this national priority locally.

“One in four girls, one in six boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18. One in five women will be sexually assaulted while at college,” says Peg Langhammer, executive director of Day One. “The theme of this year’s SAAM campaign is ‘It’s time to talk about it’ and it couldn’t be more fitting. Our 5K and other activities are designed to not only raise awareness but to also begin the conversation about sexual violence prevention and treatment.”

These crimes are widespread and occur daily in our communities, schools, and workplaces, but sexual violence can be prevented. Community members can work to prevent sexual violence by establishing healthy and positive relationships that are based on respect, safety, and equality.
