Diocese of Providence Cancels Motif’s Awards Show After Magazine Publishes Letter Critical of Bishop

Bishop Thomas Tobin
Motif Magazine's annual Rhode Island Theater Awards, which were scheduled to take place at the Diocese of Providence's McVinney Auditorium in August, have been canceled by the Church.

The cancellation was triggered by a letter by Kevin Broccoli which was published by Motif magazine.

Broccoli's letter read in part, “I should tell you now that this is not going to be the letter you think it is. Since your tweet and subsequent non-apology, many people smarter and more eloquent than I am have written about how hurtful your message was – advising Catholics not to attend Pride events and warning that those events are especially 'harmful' to children."

"Gay and straight people alike have spoken out – telling you that messages like those from people in positions such as yours have driven them from the church, or that your message is especially audacious at a time in history when more people than ever before have become aware of the church’s shameful legacy of harboring predators and pedophiles, including your own admitted instances of helping to protect such monsters," continued Broccoli. "Their messages of outrage are weighing on my mind as I write this, but I can assure you that while I am also outraged, this is not that kind of letter.”

Motif’s Mike Ryan told GoLocal of the cancellation on Saturday, “We asked for an official statement, and haven't received one yet. We received the news by phone call from the facility director, who has been our contact and - that was Friday afternoon at 2:30. After that call, he was going to get us something official, but we haven't had anything yet. We did reach out to the various communications people at the Diocese, but received no immediate response (as you may imagine on a Friday afternoon).”

The Diocese did release a statement on Saturday that acknowledges the event's cancellation.

Bishop Thomas Tobin’s only Tweet on Saturday was a Father’s Day message, “A blessed and happy Father’s Day to all! With gratitude we honor and pray for our fathers, living and departed. And we also praise God, our Father in Heaven, for the goodness, love and care He sends our way, each and every day.”

"Harmful for Children"

All of this comes just weeks after GoLocal first reported Tobin’s Tweet urging Catholics not to participate in PrideFest

GoLocal reported on June 2 that Tobin Tweeted, "A reminder that Catholics should not support or attend LGBTQ 'Pride Month' events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Catholic faith and morals. They are especially harmful for children"

The Tweet drew both immediate support -- being liked thousands of times -- as well as condemnation.

Tobin has been controversial, and the Diocese is now being sued for fraud tied to the collapse of the St. Joseph Pension Fund.

Previously, Tobin had "quit" Twitter, calling it an "occasion of sin" in July 2018. He has since rejoined the social media platform.

In response, Joe Lazzerini, President of Rhode Island Pride responded with a strong statement.

“Jesus never said a word about homosexuality, about Pride, or the Queer community. Rhode Island Pride respectfully calls on Bishop Tobin to do some self-reflection as the majority of Catholic Rhode Islanders in this state reject the idea that to be Catholic is to be complicit to intolerance, bigotry, and fear,” said Lazzerini. "Many Catholics are LGBTQIA+ and allies to our community, who participate in the love and diversity that is Rhode Island Pride. All are welcome to enjoy a safe, fun, and prideful celebration on Saturday, June 15th.”

The later in the day Tobin issued a statement in response to public outrage regarding his Tweet.

The Bishop's Tweet sparked outrage and support from across the country.

Statement of Bishop Tobin

I regret that my comments yesterday about Pride Month have turned out to be so controversial in our community, and offensive to some, especially the gay community. That certainly was not my intention, but I understand why a good number of individuals have taken offense. I also acknowledge and appreciate the widespread support I have received on this matter.

The Catholic Church has respect and love for members of the gay community, as do I. Individuals with same-sex attraction are beloved children of God and our brothers and sisters.

As a Catholic Bishop, however, my obligation before God is to lead the faithful entrusted to my care and to teach the faith, clearly and compassionately, even on very difficult and sensitive issues.  That is what I have always tried to do - on a variety of issues - and I will continue doing so as contemporary issues arise.

As the gay community gathers for a rally this evening, I hope that the event will be a safe, positive and productive experience for all. As they gather I will be praying for a rebirth of mutual understanding and respect in our very diverse community.
