Doctor and Husband Walking to Thayer Street Sunday Morning Assaulted, Threatened With Metal Pipe

The couple was visiting Providence from out of town.
The couple told police that they were walking down Meeting Street toward Thayer Street Sunday morning, when the husband said he was struck in the back of the head and punched several times by an assailant. Meeting crosses Thayer -- right by Andrea's Restaurant and the Avon Cinema.
He told police he tried to defend himself and was knocked to the ground.
The husband said the assailant then grabbed a large metal pipe off the ground and began swinging it toward him.
The couple told police they began to run away, when the assailant got into a vehicle and chased after them, driving the wrong way down Meeting Street.
The car the assailant was driving jumped a curb, at which point the couple ran into a nearby courtyard at Brown University, and the man got out of the car and ran after the couple.
The assailant then reportedly attacked the wife, at which time the husband fought the assailant again. Then, the man finally fled.
According to police who responded to the scene, there were witnesses to the attack.
Police Arrest Suspect
Based on the couple’s description of the assailant and vehicle, police were able to apprehend and arrest the suspect later that day.
He is identified as Pawtucket resident Kelvin Colon, and is being charged with simple assault.
