Rhode Island State Senator Donna Nesselbush was at the front of the pack of those who made sure it was.

On January 3, 2013, Nesselbush along with Rep. Art Handy introduced legislation to legalize same-sex marriage in Rhode Island. While the House had over half its members as sponsors, the Senate had a much more uphill battle to wage. Catholic Bishop Tobin continued to be outspoken against the measure, seeking a referendum instead, but other religious in RI countered his position.  RI's Episcopal Bishop, W. Nicholas Knisely came out in its support of gay marriage-- as did the RI Council of Churches.

In an unprecedented show of support, Nesselbush's Republican counterparts -- five in total -- all announced their backing of the Senate measure, marking the first time a party's caucus in a state legislature has supported same-sex marriage unanimously. Nesselbush had strong allies in the way of Ray Sullivan with Marriage Equality of RI and Speaker of the House Gordon Fox.  Browns' Taubman Center for Public Policy in February found that over 60% of Rhode Islanders supported gay marriage.

With momentum in their favor, Nesselbush, advocates, and elected officials ushered history through Rhode Island. On May 2, the House approved the final version of the legislation -- and Governor Chafee signed the measure into law the same day, making Rhode Island the 10th state to legalize gay marriage.

In September, Nesselbush married her partner, Kelly Carse. "This was a personal bookend to a long political struggle,” Senator Nesselbush said in a statement released by the Senate press office. “I am overwhelmed with joy and happiness right now."
