On September 24th, President Barack Obama helped to inaugurate the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. The museum is home to more than 36,000 artifacts significant in African American history and spanning topics from civil rights, to slavery, to Black Lives Matter movement.

The opening ceremony also included speeches from former president George W. Bush, Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey and others.

Brown Grad and Bank of America CEO, Brian Moynihan, and Brown University President Emeritus, Ruth Simmons, attended the event as both are on the Museum Council. Bank of America is a founding donor of the Museum, contributing approximately $4 million. BOA also donated photographer Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe’s portfolio of 61 photographs documenting the life of the Gullah/Geechee people of Daufuskie Island.
