EDITORIAL: Kudos to Providence Firefighters

On Sunday morning at approximately 10:00 a.m., when many folks were at church, having brunch or this past weekend just enjoying a beautiful fall morning, one of Providence’s most prominent buildings - the Textron Building - was hit by a rooftop fire which threatened one of Providence’s most important structures.

Within minutes Providence firefighters rose 23 flights to the top of the building to battle a vicious black smoke fire that smelled like burning plastic.

The Textron Building houses Providence’s only Fortune 500 Company. Textron, created by iconic and now deceased business leader Royal Little, is a company of global importance. The US armed forces would be deeply impacted if Textron’s Bell Helicopters could not fly. Textron owns and operates some of the most diverse brands in the world.

While Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza is in a pitched legal and financial battle with the firefighters' union, the conflict should not overshadow the bravery and work of the firefighters.

One of Providence’s most important businesses was saved, thanks to the work one Sunday morning by the Providence firefighters.

Thank you.
