EDITORIAL: Rhode Island Needs to Deploy the National Guard

Make no mistake about it, Rhode Island has a disaster on its hands and hopefully Governor Gina Raimondo will use her executive powers and deploy the National Guard or some other emergency personnel to combat the massive education failure.

Forget the conservative claims about the flaws of the PARCC test or labors fears about teaching to the test.  Rhode Island’s test results are so unimaginably bad that there is simply no place for Rhode Island’s public education to hide.

It is a collective failure. And, according to an investigative piece by GoLocal’s Kate Nagle the results were improperly vetted by the Rhode Island Department of Education, with at least some of the data reported apparently flawed.

How bad is bad?

The Worcester, Massachusetts school system is under fire for its school violence and continual poor performance. The Superintendent just left and the PARCC scores were considered an embarrassment for the Worcester school district as only 41 percent met the standard in English and a woeful 29 percent for math.

Worcester is an urban school system that has urban poverty and lots of first generation students.  With that said, Worcester outperformed Rhode Island, where 36% of test takers met expectations for English and 25 percent for math. So Worcester outperformed Providence, Barrington, East Greenwich and the other school districts in Rhode Island blended together.

The Governor needs to call out the National Guard and recreate the Rhode Island education system because our state is performing worse than the City of Worcester – this is a disaster.
