For parents that are looking for something to do with their kids over the school break, Rhode Island's Wendy Fachon is inviting families to tune into her environmental education podcasts.

"April 22 is the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day and these podcasts will provide ideas of things to do to honor and help protect the Earth," said Fachon, who noted she had completed 13 episodes so far.

The Podcasts

Each podcast begins with a Story Walk, based on a nearby outdoor venue.

Fachon weaves in fun facts about local history and nature, and suggest books (available from the Library) and outdoor activities that further explore the podcast topic.

Her latest episode is about composting, gardening and climate restoration.

Dedicated to Kids

Fachon dedicates the podcasts to her kids Evie -- and Neil, who passed away in February of 2017.

Northeastern University's Huntington News remembered Neil Fachon as "kind and optimistic" -- with a passion for science:

"At Northeastern, Fachon was involved in a multitude of activities, including the. Huntington Hall Council and the Institute of Industrial Engineers. He also conducted research about the urban heat island effect, a phenomenon that explains why cities are warmer than their surrounding areas. In the summer after Fachon's freshman year, he traveled to Italy as part of a Dialogue of Civilizations program that focuses on resource recovery and waste management.

Fachon loved exploring Italy and its culture, said Evie Fachon, a senior biology and environmental science double major at Northeastern.... Friends often described Fachon as a thinker. Evie Fachon said her brother would carefully consider issues and devise fully-formed solutions to them. It was difficult to win a logical argument with him."
