EXCLUSIVE: Hemond to be Named to Providence School Committee

Nick Hemond, the spokesman for former Gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio, will be named to the Providence School Board, GoLocalProv has confirmed.

Hemond, who is in his final year at Roger Williams Law, has a Bachelor's Degree from Providence College.

Hemond will fill the spot left vacant by former School Board President Kathy Crain, who resigned last month.

Since taking office, Mayor Angel Taveras has made three new appointments to the School Committee: Hemond, Keith Oliveira and Natalia Rosa-Sosa. He also reappointed Nina Pande, Magaly Sanchez and Phil Gould to the Board earlier this year.

Gould resigned in June.

Weeks later, the Mayor made headlines when he supported a last minute General Assembly bill that stripped the School Board of its ability to negotiate a teachers contract.

On Tuesday, the teachers overwhelmingly voted in favor of a new contract that guarantees no layoffs for three years.

Hemond could not be reached for comment.
