Former Providence City Clerk Michael Clement Dies

Michael Clement was Providence's first African American elected as clerk. The City Council today announced his death. Clement began his career with the city as Second Deputy Clerk in 1973.

He rose through the ranks and became First Deputy Clerk in 1979. In 1991, Clement was elected City Clerk and served in the role until he retired in 2006.

“Mike was a lifelong resident of Providence,” said Council President Luis Aponte. “He was a consummate public servant for 33 years, and his loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.”

“I had the privilege of working with Michael,” said Councilman John Igliozzi. “On behalf of my ward, I offer my condolences to his friends and family.”

Former Providence City Councilman and CEO of GoLocalProv said, "Mike was tremendous. He loved the job, the City, and he was a trail blazer.

“He was a good man,” said Councilman Terrence Hassett. “He was very diligent, and he ran the City Clerk’s office with great efficiency.”

On Thursday, April 21st, the City Council will issue a proclamation to his family and a resolution will be introduced to honor Clement by posthumously naming him City Clerk Emeritus.
