Former Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s official portrait will be unveiled Thursday night.

As GoLocal reported in May, the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts commissioned an out-of-state artist to paint the now U.S. Commerce Secretary — for $50,000.

Raimondo will be joined by Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee, U.S. Senator Jack Reed, and other elected officials at the unveiling.

Rhode Island's 75th Governor, Raimondo served one full term after first being elected in 2014; she was reelected in 2018 and resigned in March 2021 to take the cabinet position in the Biden Administration.

GoLocal's Will Morgan wrote "It’s Time to Dump the Official Governor’s Portrait:"

"These portraits are defined and mired in a sort of state-sponsored realism that is always popular but typically associated with totalitarian regimes, whether politically left or right," wrote Morgan in his look at prior portraits.
That genre should have been killed by photography."
