General Petraeus Love Scandal: RI Officials React

As more details regarding former CIA director General David Petraeus’ love affair come to light, Rhode Island’s two members of the House of Representatives said an investigation into the matter is warranted and that Petraeus’ resignation was appropriate.

"There should be a thorough investigation into this sensitive matter,” said Richard Luchette, a spokesman for Congressman David Cicilline. “Congressman Cicilline’s first concern is for our national security interests, and he is confident that President Obama will soon appoint a qualified long-term replacement for this vital intelligence post."

In a statement to GoLocalProv, Congressman James Langevin praised Petraeus for his work in the military, but said his resignation was the right call.

“I have tremendous respect for General Petraeus, whose exemplary service has made us more secure,” said Langevin, who often spoke with Petraeus as a member of the House Armed Services and Intelligence Committees. “Unfortunately, given the circumstances, it appears resignation was the only appropriate course of action.”

Petraeus resigned last week after admitting to an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell.

The story took another twist Tuesday when reports surfaced suggest Petraeus and General John Allen wrote letters on behalf of the twin sister of Florida socialite Jill Kelley, who was involved in a custody battle. Kelley also figures into the love affair.

Kelley’s sister, Natalie Khawam, also receieved a $300,000 personal loan from Gerald Harrington, a Providence-based lawyer, lobbyist and Democratic fundraiser, bankruptcy filings show. Harrington did not return a request for comment.
