Ghiorse Storm Update: Expect Mix of Snow, Sleet & Freezing Rain

John Ghiorse
Winter isn't "officially" here but sometimes that doesn't matter to Mother Nature. With cold air in place and a storm developing along the East Coast today, it looks like we're in for an early season touch of winter later in the day and tonight. While this is not likely to be a "blockbuster" storm that we often encounter during the winter, we will see some nasty going late in the evening commute into the wee morning hours of Friday.

Expect clouds to increase today with a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to cover the area in the late afternoon and evening.

Accumulations won't be large but areas north and west of Providence could pick up a few inches of slushy snow an sleet and the Providence area up to a  couple of the same. In areas south of Providence toward the coast a thin slippery coating may occur before mainly rain takes over. With the atmosphere warming slowly most areas will see a change to rain in the wee morning hours Friday, except for interior valleys where cold air could hold creating a crust of freezing rain into Friday morning.

Most of the mess should gradually end Friday, perhaps by noon. A dry, but chilly weekend follows.
