Ghiorse: Sunday Night Storm Update

One of the wonders of meteorology that I have noticed during my career is that no two storms are ever exactly alike. Yes, they fall into general categories but each individual storm provides its own unique twists and turn. Tonight's is, of course, no exception. This one has come at us in dribs and drabs, at least to start. There, as yet, is no well defined storm center although one or more is likely to form overnight. We do have the requisite ample moisture, cold air and atmospheric energy necessary to bring MOST of us several inches of snow between now and tomorrow night.

With such a disorganized storm system, there should be quite a bit of variability in precipitation type and snow accumulation totals. The snow should accumulate more to the north and less to the south. The Worcester area may reach 8-16 inches with 6-12 common through Northern and Central Rhode Island. Sleet and rain will help to cut Southern Rhode Island totals to 3-6 inches before it winds down and end Monday night or early Tuesday.

This pattern shows no signs of letting up anytime soon. More snow is more than likely Thursday and Arctic cold will follow through the weekend.
