Ghiorse Update: Hurricane Jose Moves Towards New England

John Ghiorse
Hurricane Jose is currently moving slowly northwestward from a position close to 1000 miles south of Rhode Island. Jose is not a very intense (now Category 1) or large hurricane, however, it still could strengthen a bit and its track may well come close to Southern New England during the middle part (Tuesday/Wednesday) of next week. Once it moves north of the Gulf Stream, it will encounter colder ocean water and that should prevent further strengthening if not weaken Jose.

The current official track takes the storm east of Nantucket on Wednesday.

If that holds true, we should see conditions resembling a strong northeaster with gusty northeast winds, some rain and perhaps some spectacular surf. A closer approach of Jose is not out of the question, so will continue to watch it carefully with further updates.
