Providence Recreation Director Michael Stephens has claimed that his referee duties for NCAA basketball games, which saw him officiate 89 contests in just over 108 days in 23 states last year, were made possible by vacation time while serving as Deputy Recreation Director for the City of Providence.

GoLocal caught up with Stephens on Monday at Providence Mayor Elorza's press conference unveiling the city's summer recreation schedule, under the now Directorship of Stephens, who has indicated he still intends to referee Division I basketball moving forward.
