Greatest Living Rhode Islanders - 2023 Version

L-R Umberto Crenca, John Ghiorse, Joe Mazzulla, Viola Davis, and Gina Raimondo
GoLocal has updated the list of the 50 Greatest Living Rhode Islanders.

The list was first compiled in 2016 and updated again in 2018, 2020, and now in 2023.

Sadly, three of the greatest died during the past three years:

The additions to the list are individuals who are outstanding Rhode Islanders who have done extraordinary things to enhance the state and even the world.

This year we have added:

Joe Mazzula

Gina Raimondo

Rocco Baldelli

In developing the initial list in 2016, GoLocal reached out to many of the state's leaders and influencers in a range of fields to ask them who are the greatest living Rhode Islanders.

The criteria are defined, but of course, have elements that are amorphous. First, they need to have lived and worked in Rhode Island — they need a significant connection.

To be selected for the list, one simply could not have just attended college in Rhode Island and then gone to do great things nor could they have worked just a small portion of their careers. Thus, for example, Family Guy creator and RISD grad Seth MacFarlane would not make the list.

To be a living great Rhode Islander — this must be your state in residence — or spirit.

How "Greatest" Were Chosen

As stated, the list of greatest living Rhode Islanders was first published in 2016 and updated in 2018. Developing the list was a challenge, with so many talented and accomplished Rhode Islanders.

Those bigger-than-life leaders —like political titans Bruce Sundlun, John Chafee, and Claiborne Pell are not easy to replace. And, some of our most talented individuals have moved out of Rhode Island and are now living and working elsewhere, pursuing their amazing careers. They are no longer connected to Rhode Island.

What was refreshing was how many of Rhode Island’s greats are tied to our colleges and universities -- a cornerstone to Rhode Island's success. Each person on the list is distinct and very few on the Greatest Living list are also on GoLocal's biannual 50 Wealthiest and Most Influential. Greatness does not equate exclusively to wealth.

Some on this list are well-known in the state, but many have greater awareness in their field outside of Rhode Island. The list is meant to spark discussions about what we value and how excellence is achieved.

Finally, please share your thoughts (respectfully) as everyone on this list deserves recognition and has made great contributions — they may not make your list, but they did make ours.

Enjoy the greatness — as pound for pound; no state may have more talent.
