The Naval Undersea Warfare Warfare Center (NUWC) in Newport is at the center of a growing Chinese hacking controversy -- that the Washington Post was first to report.

As the Post wrote of a contractor working for the NUWC -- which is the United States Navy's full-spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support center for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and more:

Chinese government hackers have compromised the computers of a Navy contractor, stealing massive amounts of highly sensitive data related to undersea warfare — including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.

The breaches occurred in January and February, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. The hackers targeted a contractor who works for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, a military organization headquartered in Newport, R.I., that conducts research and development for submarines and underwater weaponry.

The officials did not identify the contractor.

WPRI-12 reported Monday that United States Senator Jack Reed had spoken with the Navy’s top officer after last week’s report that the Chinese government successfully hacked a contractor for one of the service's most important Newport operations.

As WPRI wrote:

Reed, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, described the incident as “very serious” while speaking to reporters after an event in Providence. “It involved information that in itself may not have been classified but cumulatively is very revealing of programs,” he said.
