Guarding the Gang Member - Providence Police Officer Mica Waters

Mica Waters
As I stand guard at a hospital for one of the latest prisoners/victims of a shooting, I am in deep thought.

I have been here every day with this young man! Half of my shift until the next officer comes.

Most of these people are kids, family members and my friends' kids or neighbors that I know. Kids that I once saw living what was a normal life in Providence. Playing basketball, football & hanging in the Recs. It’s so sad to see how it comes to this!

The streets don’t love you! The crew that you roll with may be there at that moment repping your so-called hood.

Where will they be when it comes to this moment?

They can't help you fight for your life! You are left to stay in a bed with a bunch of strangers (nurses & doctors).

Strangers that are caring for you in a hospital bed. Tubes down your throat & loads of things stuck in your arms. Your crew in the streets don’t see or feel what your feeling at this moment.

Your parents & loved ones can’t even see you because I am here so that makes you a prisoner. Now, I sit here and wonder if you are going to make it!

I pray that you do! I pray for the fact that if you do, you won’t continue the cycle of violence.

God only knows if you will make it. I wonder what did you do to get here? Who did you hurt that wanted to hurt you? How does this happen?

So many questions! Being a Providence kid just like myself I just don’t know!
