Guest MINDSETTER™ Dr. Mazze - Asking the Right Questions Now on PawSox

The PawSox stadium proposal is on a fast-track to obtain financial support in one way or another from Rhode Island and the City of Providence. Various studies have been presented on the viability of a new stadium in Providence, and another study of about $150,000 has been commissioned. Positions are already  staked-out on whether or not a new stadium should be built in Providence at a specific location.

What is missing in these deliberations are answers to the following questions:

How many people buy season tickets to the PawSox each year?
Where do season ticket holders live?
How much money do season ticket holders spend when they go to a game?  for items such as food, souvenirs, transportation to the game?
How many games a year do season ticket holders go to?
Would season ticket holders go to Providence for a game?
Would season ticket holders pay a seat license fee of $25,000 for a new stadium?  [This is a way to make up any shortfall if only private money was used to build a stadium]
How many games a season are played at the stadium? Of this number, how many games are played in the afternoon, how many games are played in the evening?
How many seats are in the current stadium?
What is the average ticket price for a baseball game?
What is the average paid attendance at an afternoon game? an evening game?
How many complimentary tickets are provided to community organizations and others for an afternoon game? an evening game?

The answers to these questions are available from management and local and state taxing authorities.  Marketing research is needed to collect information from baseball season ticket holders and baseball game attendees. The answers to these twenty-five questions are important in any discussion of a new stadium. And, I am sure that there are many other questions that need to be addressed.  Transparency is more important than expediency.
