House Budget Debate Will Resume on Saturday at 10 AM — One Big Issue Remains

The House convened on Friday afternoon to take up the FY2020 $9.9 billion budget -- and after hours of deliberation, the House will continue consideration of the tax-and-spend measure on Saturday.

It was a little after 10 PM on Friday night that Speaker Nick Mattiello announced the continuation discussion. In the past few years, Mattiello had agreed to reform the budget process with no more all night sessions.

The House of Representatives will continue its consideration of the state budget on Saturday, June 22 at approximately 10 a.m. in the House chamber.

The one big issue yet to see some vigorous debate is around the carve-up of the six new compassion centers. Long-time State House lobbyist Joe Walsh (former Warwick Mayor), former State Senator Steve Alves, and Wally Gernt are lobbying to protect the interests of the three existing compassion centers.

On the other side, former Providence Journal executive Mark Ryan turned lobbyist -- representing two marijuana interests -- is seeking the expansion to nine and the provision that the existing compassion companies be prohibited from owning any of the new centers.

Presently, the budget expands the number of compassion centers from 3 to 9 and increases the licensing fee to $500,000.
