How RI Student Loan Authority Helps Families Navigate College Applications & Financial Aid

Solanchi Fernandez with the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority’s College Planning Center appeared on GoLocal LIVE where she talked about how the organization helps students and families navigate the college admissions process — for free.

“So RISLA’s college planning center, we’re here to service all of Rhode Island students and families to go through the whole process of college planning, from the admissions to the financial aid and even after they receive their acceptance letters, we’ll review those with them and also help them make a good, sound decision based on value for their students,” said Fernandez.

“If there are issues or questions about financing, we also go over all the financing options available out there — so we cover all sorts of subjects to help them, and kind of ease their minds and help them realized that’s it’s not as stressful as it should be, because we’re here to make it less stressful,” she added. “And all of our services are free.”

Fernandez also talked about how RISLA helps families with the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form — and more.

“We help take the stress out of it by actually filling it out for them and understand that it could be stressful but luckily the government has made filling out that form easier as time’s gone by,” she said.

“Then there’s the private sector, and that’s where a lot of money gets kind of, I call it left on the table because there’s a lot of money out there for private scholarships and grants but students don’t take the time to research it,” said Fernandez. “There is money out there — it’s just a matter of students taking the time to research it and actually apply.”
