Jim Vincent: 14 Who Made a Difference in RI in 2014

Jim Vincent
The President of the NAACP Providence Branch, Vincent was a constant presence and and voice of leadership in the city during the past year, from seeing the opening of the Davey Lopes pool after the year long effort to reopen it, to calling for support when gang-fueled violence reached a head on multiple occasions.

GoLocal had the opportunity to sit down with Vincent earlier in the year when Vincent was featured as a PowerPlayer, as to his thoughts on what is need from the city's next Mayor.

"The next Mayor of Providence needs to understand that the failure of the public schools in the capital city is a tremendous drag on our state's ability to attract quality businesses to Rhode Island who are looking for that trained, educated and motivated workforce," said Vincent.  "Providence and Rhode Island face major financial problems which cannot be solved by austerity. We need to grow our way to normalcy and eventually to prosperity. Also, there is a need for far more people of color, particularly African Americans, at top municipal positions. New blood, new creativity, more productivity. The old way is not working."

Following the grand jury decision in Ferguson and the protests that followed, Vincent voiced his disappointment that protestors in Providence took to the highway and shut down traffic, resulting in five arrests.

While Vincent has been a strong advocate for the community in years past, his leadership and guidance were called upon time and time again in 2014 during a tumultuous year.
