Kilmartin Backs Federal Immigration Program

Attorney General-elect Peter Kilmartin announced today that he would participate in a new federal immigration program soon after taking office.

Under the new program, people who are arrested would have their fingerprints automatically checked in a national database to see if they are legal immigrants. The program, known as “Secure Communities” will launch in 2013, according to an AP report posted on 630 WPRO, a GoLocalProv media partner.

“When in office, Attorney General-Elect Kilmartin will implement a 'Secure Communities' initiative to crack down on crime by illegal immigrants and further protect Rhode Island families," said spokesman Brett Broesder. "He will work with the Department of Homeland Security to run background checks on anyone who is arrested, which will help the federal government identify illegal immigrants.”
