Last Chance: Bring Joy To A Child With NEARI's Gingerbread Express

Members of the National Education Association Rhode Island (NEARI), help Rhode Island students in a many ways, including stepping up to aid their home lives. Through the organization's charitable arm, the NEARI Children’s Fund, hundreds of them shop to ensure that needy students receive holiday gifts.

For the 22nd year, the NEARI Children’s Fund Gingerbread Express program will provide nearly 2,000 children, and some families, with gifts from hundreds of volunteer Rhode Island teachers, school and public employees, and friends of the Fund.

The Fund matches names of needy children, one by one, with willing donors. Each child is identified on a gingerbread cutout by number only, along with clothing sizes and a wish list that helps shoppers make the right choices. The generosity of donors grows by the year, with each spending more than $100 per child. Enormous bags and boxes – one for each student – fill the NEARI headquarters in Cranston.
