Make A Difference, Ocean State Job Lot To Donate 2,000 Turkeys

Today, volunteers from the Make A Difference Foundation Board, the Advisory Committee, their families and the community will assemble at the Cranston Ice Rink at 12:00 pm to meet a truckload of 2,000 turkeys procured by All American Foods of North Kingstown.

Additionally, Ocean State Job Lot has donated $4,500 toward the cost of the turkeys, as well as 2,000 pounds of Maine potatoes, to be distributed to shelters, churches, schools, soup kitchens, and food programs in Rhode Island that serve the needy this time of year.

“Job Lot is by far our biggest donor,” states Allen B. Gammons, Jr., a Board member of the West Warwick-based Make A Difference Foundation since its inception in 1992. "We are grateful to Job Lot for their generosity allowing us to not only increase the amount of turkeys we can give away this Thanksgiving, but to add an additional meal site to our list of recipients.”

Beginning at 12:30 pm, after several organizations pick up their donated food on their own, a caravan of volunteers of all ages will follow the trucks to each of the planned stops from Pawtucket to Providence, unloading the turkeys and potatoes via assembly line and delivering holiday cheer to the program recipients throughout the day.

Over 20 organizations are on the 2013 list to receive the turkeys and potatoes, including: AIDS Care (Providence), Camp Street Ministries (Providence), Laureen Grebien Holiday Baskets Program (Pawtucket), North Kingstown Food Pantry, Providence Rescue Mission (Cranston), numerous churches with meal programs, and, new for 2013, Nickerson House Community Center (Providence).

“I’ve been doing this for 22 years and many of us bring our children and family members to participate,” states Shannon Russell, vice president and treasurer of the Make A Difference Foundation Board. “It’s an eye opener for many to witness first-hand the need in our state, by seeing the homeless in line for food, some holding babies even in the pouring rain. It teaches our children to appreciate their lives and not be selfish or take things for granted. Thanks to Job Lot and others who contributed funds, we can feed even more people and truly make a difference in our state this Thanksgiving.”
