Making the Grade: What Schools Did the Best

In its annual report card on how much schools improved on test scores, the state singled out 20 schools that did especially well. Those receiving commendations represented a cross-section of the schools in the state—from Central Falls to East Greenwich.

What the Commendations Mean

Closing Equity Gaps means that three or more groups of students have increased their NECAP index scores two points higher than the statewide gain for all students. An “index score” is a calculation of how students in a school performed on the test as a whole. There are eight possible groups within a school: African-Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, Hispanics, whites, those learning English as a second language, students in the free and reduced lunch program, and students with learning disabilities.

Significant Improvement refers to a school that overall has increased the scores of its students by 1.5 points two years in a row.

High Achievement means that a school is in the top 10 percent of all schools for two years in a row in the reading and math NECAP tests.
