About Incident

Police were called shortly after 10:30 PM on Tuesday to 213 Wendall Street for a report of a hang-up 911 call.

Upon arrival, police met with the female victim, who said Sheriff had taken her phone and refused to return it to her.

According to police, the woman had abrasions to her neck that appeared to be fresh wounds.

Police said they met with Sheriff, who denied assaulting the woman, and said another man had been responsible.

Due to the extent of the woman’s injuries, police determined Sheriff should be placed under arrest.

Police said Sheriff then refused to cooperate and assaulted officers, spitting at them and injuring one officer’s hand, sending two officers to the hospital.

During the altercation, police said they used their department-issued tasers.

Sheriff was ultimately transported to Central Station for booking; the officers have been treated and released from RI Hospital.
