Shortly before 1:30 AM on Sunday, Providence police responded to the parking lot of Mt. Pleasant Hardware at 249 Academy Avenue.

A female caller had told police she heard what she believed was a saw being used to steal catalytic converters from U-Hauls in the lot.

The location is just blocks from the Mount Pleasant Library.

Police reported searching the area before locating the suspect -- Gomez -- who then fled on foot with what police observed to be a red blade roughly twelve inches in length.

According to police, they pursued Gomez who refused orders to stop; when police were able to reach Gomez, they reported that he assaulted an officer before being detained and arrested.

Police reportedly seized a Sawzill blade and located two cut-off catalytic converters in the rear yard of 255 Academy Avenue.

Gomez will be held for the next session of court.
