Man in Camouflage With Long Rifle Reported in Providence - State Police Called in for Manhunt

Police received reports of shots fired -- and a man with a long rifle -- in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Providence Thursday evening. 

Multiple units were called in for backup, including the State Police. 

The incident followed a man being shot in downtown Providence earlier in the day

And a woman shot the evening before in Providence.

 

About Incident 

Shortly before 7:30 PM on Thursday, police responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Pocasset Avenue. 

Police say that upon arrival, they found a car at the intersection of Ethan Street and Silver Lake Avenue with its doors open.

According to police, a bullet hole was located above the passenger side wheel; more than a dozen shell casings were found at the scene. 

Witnesses told police a man was hiding in the backyard of a residence on Silver Lake Avenue; police found and detained a male in his 30s at the location. 

Approximately 15 minutes later, police said they were flagged down by a witness who said there was a man in camouflage who was seen running through people's yards with a rifle.

It was at this time multiple units, including the Rhode Island State Police, were called in for backup and to set up a perimeter. 

Police said they were unable to locate another individual; the search was called off shortly before 9 PM.
