Man Shot, Another Stabbed in Providence Overnight - Smiley Holds Event on "Hurricane Preparedness"

A man was shot, and another was stabbed in Providence overnight, in the latest incidents of violence in the city.

The shooting victim had been sitting in his car when shots were fired; the stabbing victim reportedly had the knife still in his head when police arrived on the scene. 

The two incidents are unrelated.

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley held a press conference — on hurricane preparedness. 

 

About Latest Incidents

Shooting

Police were called to Cranston Street shortly before 8 PM Sunday for a report of shots fired. 

According to police, shell casings were found in front of Ritas Pizza.

While police were at the scene, officers were informed a gunshot victim was at Rhode Island Hospital. 

At the hospital, the victim — a male in his 20s — told police he had been sitting in his car when he heard gunshots and realized he had been hit in the leg. 

He then went to RI Hospital for treatment. 

 

Stabbing

On Sunday evening at approximately 6 PM, police were called to the intersection of Elmwood and Bellevue Avenues for a report of a stabbing.

According to police, when they encountered the victim walking on Elmwood Avenue, he was bleeding profusely and had a kitchen knife lodged in his head. 

The victim — a male in his 40s — was taken by rescue to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. 

Police said a trail of blood could be seen on the streets; police seized the knife handle found at the scene.

 

Smiley on Hurricanes

On Monday, Smiley joined officials at the hurricane barrier on Bridge Street to "share important information about hurricane season preparedness" and "highlight the City’s proactive investments to prepare for extreme weather and mitigate flooding."
